Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The West Palm Beach Owner’s Guide

Schluter kitchen remodeling in West Palm Beach typically runs $14,000 – $45,000 installed, depending on whether we’re rebuilding a full kitchen with Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling systems or addressing a smaller section like a backsplash or island. We stock Schluter Kerdi, Ditra, and trim profiles, and most repairs or replacements can be scheduled within the same week. What usually brings a homeowner to this page is a failing tile installation: cracked grout, a loose tile, water staining at the counter line, or a pan that isn’t draining the way it used to.

The Schluter system is only as good as the substrate under it and the mortar bed holding the tile. In West Palm Beach, where summer humidity runs high and slab-on-grade homes move with seasonal moisture, a small installation error becomes visible within a year or two. Sometimes it’s the waterproofing layer that was never fully bonded. Sometimes it’s the wrong Schluter profile on an outside corner. Either way, the fix starts with identifying exactly which Schluter component is involved and matching it to the same size, profile, and series.

Before any work starts, we give you a written price. Not a range that grows. Put it in writing, then do exactly that.

Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a lot of products, and the compatibility questions matter. The main families we work with in West Palm Beach kitchens are:

  • Kerdi membrane and Kerdi-Board – waterproofing for backsplashes, sink walls, and behind-cabinet runs where spills and splash-back are constant. Kerdi-Board comes in thicknesses from 3/16″ to 2″, and the wrong thickness at a counter-to-backsplash transition will leave a lip you can feel with your hand every time you wipe the counter.
  • Ditra and Ditra-Heat – uncoupling and floor-warming membranes under tile floors. Ditra is orange and waffled; Ditra-Heat adds a cable channel. The common failure in Florida kitchens is not the membrane itself but the thinset bond beneath it, usually because the slab wasn’t cleaned or primed properly before the membrane went down.
  • Schluter profiles – the aluminum, stainless steel, and PVC trim edges marked with names like Rondec, Schiene, Jolly, and Quadec. Each profile has a specific tile-thickness range it’s designed for. A Rondec profile rated for 3/8″ tile will not sit flush with a 1/2″ porcelain tile, and that mismatch is exactly what causes the lippage and edge chipping we see.

How to identify what you have: look at the profile edge or membrane surface for the printed Schluter name and a size code like “Rondec 1/2” or “Kerdi 200”. The number refers to the tile thickness or membrane thickness in millimeters or inches, depending on the product line. We can match from a photo or a small sample, but a quick measurement at the site is more reliable.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Schluter profiles and membranes don’t really have meaningful aftermarket equivalents that we’d install. The profiles are extruded to tight tolerances, and a generic aluminum edge will not match the corner pieces or end caps from the Schluter system. For trim profiles, we install Schluter or a quality match like Genesis if the original is discontinued. For membranes and uncoupling systems, we replace with Schluter OEM – mixing building systems under a tile assembly is how warranty claims get denied. If a Schluter product is no longer made, we tell you that plainly and offer the closest compatible option with a written note on what changed and why.

One more compatibility gotcha that saves people money: Schluter profiles for countertops and Schluter profiles for shower floors are not interchangeable. The counter profiles have a taller, flatter vertical leg. If a handyman installs a shower profile at a kitchen counter edge, the tile will sit proud of the trim line. We redo a handful of those every year.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracking along the counter-to-backsplash line, especially near the sink. This usually means the substrate behind the Kerdi membrane is swelling or the slab is moving, and the grout line is failing before the tile. Sealing the grout won’t help; the movement is under the surface.
  • A tile that sounds hollow when you tap it. Hollow tile over Ditra means the thinset never fully bonded, often because it was allowed to skin over before the tile was set, or the slab was dusty. The tile holds until a heavy pot hits it, then it cracks.
  • Water staining or mineral build-up at the bottom of the backsplash. That’s water wicking behind the tile. In a properly waterproofed Schluter installation, water cannot get behind the membrane. Staining at the base means there’s a gap in the waterproofing or the membrane was never there.
  • Schluter trim profiles lifting, tarnishing, or pulling away from the tile edge. Aluminum profiles can corrode in West Palm Beach’s salt air, especially near the coast, if a non-anodized version was installed. Once the profile lifts, the tile edge is exposed and chipping follows quickly.
  • Floor tile cracking in a straight line across the room. That’s a substrate joint telegraphing through the tile. Ditra is designed to allow lateral movement below the tile, but only if the substrate joints were handled correctly. A straight-line crack usually means someone skipped a step, not that the tile failed.

If any of these signs show up, don’t start pulling tile. The problem underneath tells you more than the visible surface, and pulling the wrong tile can make a small repair into a full replacement.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A galley kitchen opened up to the dining room with a new peninsula

A full Schluter kitchen remodeling project in West Palm Beach generally runs $14,000 – $45,000. A smaller, targeted repair – say, replacing a failed Ditra section under a 20-square-foot area, re-waterproofing a backsplash with fresh Kerdi, or swapping damaged Schluter profiles – falls toward the lower end of that range or below it, depending on access and the condition of the surrounding tile.

What drives the price in West Palm Beach specifically:

  • Slab condition. Older slab homes in neighborhoods like Flamingo Park carry moisture and cracking patterns that new construction doesn’t. Proper slab prep before Ditra installation adds labor but prevents the exact failure you’re seeing.
  • Tile size and profile match. Matching an existing profile means pulling a sample and ordering the exact size and finish. Large-format tile requires different thinset and leveling work than subway tile.
  • How much was wrong from the start. When we open a section of failed Schluter work, sometimes the membrane is misaligned, the profile is the wrong height, and the substrate was never prepped. We show you photos before we close anything up.
Work Type Typical Installed Range in West Palm Beach
Full kitchen remodel with Schluter waterproofing & uncoupling $14,000 – $45,000
Small kitchen remodel $9,000 – $20,000
Countertop installation (Cambria, Silestone, Caesarstone) $2,000 – $6,500
Backsplash installation with Kerdi waterproofing $800 – $2,500
Kitchen island installation $3,000 – $10,000

The written price we give you before work starts includes the Schluter membranes, profiles, mortar, labor, haul-away, shoe covers, and drop cloths. Every line is itemized. If the price changes mid-project – and the only fair reason is something behind the wall we couldn’t see – we stop, show you what we found, and get your written approval on the new number before any additional work proceeds. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the completed work: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely do yourself: measure the profile length and width, take photos of the failing area from three angles, find any printed Schluter markings, and note whether the tile moves or sounds hollow. That information makes the first phone call faster and the quote more accurate. You can also check for water staining under the sink and around the dishwasher line.

What we don’t recommend trying yourself: pulling the tile or membrane. Schluter Kerdi and Ditra work as a bonded system, and pulling up a section without knowing where the waterproofing laps and overlaps will tear the membrane in a way that leaks under the next tile too. The thinset bond is also unforgiving – once it skins over, it will not bond to the tile, and a do-it-yourself repair usually fails within the first humid season. The tools and techniques are specific to the product. This isn’t about skill; it’s about the tolerances in the system.

If you’re in West Palm Beach and the damage is past the surface, call us at (728) 203-3270. We’ll walk the site, identify the exact Schluter component, and put the fix in writing before any work starts.
